Saving money on paying for luggage on flights is one of the first ways you can cut down on travel expenses and save your money for all the adventure and activities instead.

Avoid paying for luggage with these tips

1. Travel light

A big mistake a lot of people make when travelling is packing too much. Over packing usually, ends up with you not even using everything you brought with you. And it’s a complete waste of money if you have to pay extra to accommodate the heavy load you want to bring on to your flight. It’s important to travel light.

  • Bring clothes that you can use repeatedly

  • Bring shoes that are light and don’t take up too much weight

  • Make sure you plan what you’ll wear for every day of your travels so that you only bring the clothes you have to bring. (Add one or two light shirts for emergencies)

  • Don’t bring heavy toiletries like full sized toothpaste and shampoo bottles. Buy travel-friendly sizes if you need it. But if you know you can buy it where you’re going, don’t even bring any, it’s just added weight.

  • If you have gadgets, wear it in a backpack. It’s almost universal that airlines allow you to bring one hand carry and a backpack for gadgets. Just confirm this with your airline before doing it to be 100% sure.

2. Check whether your ticket covers luggage

A lot of long flights cover luggage that you don’t have to pay for so make sure you have this on your flight. This leads to the next tip.

3. Compare ticket prices including baggage fees

Try to get a ticket that already includes a check-in baggage if you are planning to travel for several weeks. This is so much cheaper than buying added luggage weight on top of your flight cost.

4. Buy and use a duffle bag that’s the right size

This is a great tip for many who want to travel light. A duffle bag weighs a lot less than hard case luggage bags. This can give you more of a chance to take up more of the weight of your travel bag, for the clothes and items you need for your travels. It’s important you get a sturdy and strong duffle bag that’s light in weight. This is definitely easy to find since many great designer duffle bags range between $80 to $200, that is built to last years of wear and tear.

5. If you can, place everything on your carry on luggage

Using only your carry on luggage means that you don’t have to pay extra for luggage to be checked in. Maximize the carry on luggage with the use of a light duffle back. This will save you money and extra time checking-in luggage’s and wait for luggage when you get off the flight too.

6. Book flights at the odd times

Usually, a flight that’s book on the odd hour of the day, between 1 am to 8 am, are cheaper. And the same goes for the airline baggage fees. This can save you a few dollars that you can use for other things in your travel

8. Travel in low season

Avoiding peak seasons mean that you are avoiding expensive flights and airline baggage fees if you do need to check-in travel bags. It’s also a good tip to save more money on your entire trip as it means that hotels, restaurants and activities are also cheaper as it isn’t their tourist seasons.

9. Wear the heavy items

To save you from paying to check in luggage, or extra expenses for overweigh carry-ons, wear the heavy items you have to bring on to your flight. If you have to bring a heavy jacket, don’t pack it; wear it on the flight. The air conditioning in aeroplanes are usually very chilly anyways, so it’s even better if you wear your jacket. If you also have heavy shoes that you definitely need to bring, wear them on the flight. The same goes for sweaters and belts. It’s better to wear it as you won’t personally be weighed, and it’ll be a load off of the luggage you get checked in or carried on.

10. Do research

One of the most important tips we can give you is to do a lot of research. Make it a point that you know what you need to bring and what’s completely unnecessary. With so many different travel blogs online, it’s easy to find experienced travellers who are happy to share their experiences on what to bring and what not to waste you luggage weight on. Make the most of the information you can gather so that you can travel and only bring the necessities on your trip. Don’t let yourself be the victim of over packing and having to pay for luggage expenses that you actually don’t have to pay for.

It’s important to save as much money as you can. And saving this money means you can spend more on your food, your activities and everything else you want to do when you travel. There are millions of blogs that can advise you on what you need to bring to a country and what isn’t necessary. Make the most of all the information you can gather on the internet and you’ll find yourself completely able to cut costs on the luggage expenses we are often burdened with at the airport. The cheaper the cost of your vacation is, the more money you can spend on yourself and your adventure.
